SWR, tuners, and what to measure first

A beginner-friendly explainer for feed line checks, dummy-load testing, antenna-analyzer readings, and when to stop transmitting and re-check the setup.

What SWR is really telling you

SWR is a clue about how well the transmitter, feed line, and antenna system are matched. A high SWR does not automatically tell you which part is wrong. It tells you the radio is seeing a mismatch at that point in the system.

A tuner can help the radio see a better match, but it does not magically fix a bad connector, water in coax, a broken antenna, or excessive feed-line loss.

Start with a dummy load

A known-good dummy load is one of the best troubleshooting tools in the shack. Connect the radio to the dummy load with a short known-good coax jumper. At low power, the SWR should be close to 1:1. If it is not, stop and check the radio, meter, jumper, or dummy load before blaming the antenna.

Safety note: use a dummy load rated for the power and time you plan to transmit. Some dummy loads are only rated for short tests.

Then test by sections

If the radio and meter look good into a dummy load, move outward one section at a time. Test the jumper, then the feed line, then the antenna. If you have an antenna analyzer or NanoVNA-style tool, sweep the antenna system at the feed point and then through the installed feed line. Comparing those readings can reveal feed-line or connector problems.

What to look for

A suddenly high SWR on all bands can point to a disconnected shield, broken center conductor, wrong connector, water intrusion, or antenna damage. A narrow dip in the wrong place may mean the antenna length or nearby environment changed. A tuner that used to match easily but now struggles is a sign to inspect before transmitting more.

Stop conditions

Stop transmitting and re-check if SWR is very high, the radio folds back power, a connector gets warm, you smell hot insulation, the tuner arcs or chatters, or readings change wildly when the coax moves. Do not keep applying power to “see if it clears up.”

Measure from the radio outward and change one thing at a time. A tuner is useful, but a good troubleshooting routine is better.
